The first lecturing session passed…what we learned?

2. How to be a strategic partner to the top management?
These were the main topics in the first two days of the CIPR Internal Communication Certificate qualification programme in Bulgaria. On 10 and 11 February the first group of students in this course in Bulgaria made initial steps in mastering the internal communications profession. And these two steps were taken under the guidance of the creator of the Certificate Kevin Ruck and Ann Pilkington, founder of PR Academy (UK).
One of the first impressions that we had after the course started was…
Our first student group for the Certificate consists only of women.
Not bad, but a little bit challenging for Kevin to hold the line. 
So, what the students did?
Here are the notes of Kevin Ruck:
Course - Day One: “Theory, theory and more theory. Culture, management, and communication. But then, there’s nothing more practical than a good theory. And, guess what, research shows that senior managers want internal communication managers to use theory more.”
Course - Day Two: “Research, research and more research. Plans that can be measured lead to a more strategic approach. But how do we do the day job and plan?”
The participants in the programme were involved in a lot of case studies and practical tasks to find the answers themselves, guided by Ann and Kevin. “Communication is the key” agreed all students. ‘And main elements of the communication process are collaboration with the senior management and engaging the employees in the company strategy’.
The internal communicator’s job seems to be e challenging one, especially at a time of social cataclysms and organizational changes. What’s needed to be a good professional is a solid theory and strategic thinking - that’s what the participants learned and shared practical experience how to do it.
After lectures Ann wrote: “Running the CIPR Internal Communication Certificate in Bulgaria has been a great experience for me. It is so interesting to hear about internal communication in Bulgaria and to realize that practitioners face similar changes to those in the UK. I hope that the students enjoyed it as much as I did!”

Well, it’s Saturday and Ann and I are back in the UK. Ann is off to London to teach the internal communication certificate with a group of 20 practitioners and I am catching up on my emails and calls.
We both really enjoyed the sessions in Sofia - everyone in the group inspired us with their enthusiasm and passion for internal communication. It was great that we had such energy in the room and I know that this will be taken back to the workplace and meaasurable plans will soon be in place. This is the first thing I will be checking when I return in March!

What’s needed to be a qualified and good professional in internal communications? I’ve learned a lot from that first lecturing session thanks to Ann and Kevin and the shared experince from my colleagues in Bulgaria. I’ve realised that the internal communicator profession is really hard, but the questions “What?” and “Why?” are a good point to start communicating within the organisation. The internal communication is not only in delivering messages - it’s about strategic planning and peer-to-peer communication. And the internal communicator has to change, qualify and develop its professional potential constantly.
