Who are the students in CIPR Internal Communication Certificate? Part 3

Veronika Gerginova from Bulgaria

dsc 0573 160x300 Who are the students in CIPR Internal Communication Certificate? Part 3Veronika is one of the students in CIPR Internal Communication Certificate who achieves the SMART-goals in her every day work as an Internal Communication Speicialist at Globul . Smiling and open person - she involves you very easy in her world.

Veronika, how does your work day go?

Chaotically as usual. It starts with the hottest news from the press, related to our company, state policy and the telecommunications as a whole and continues with the internal communication issues - employees’ feedback or comments on some topics, questions by my internal customers, things we have to say and / or promote, etc. The most interesting and important moment is the networking - meeting with colleagues from different units, different hierarchal levels. Of course, there are plenty of ongoing tasks and projects, action plans which require attention.

Create the profile of a good internal communication specialist, as you see it.

I see it as a very communicative and social person who can easily establish formal and informal relationships; a person who can work in a dynamic and ever changing environment and adjust himself/herself and the internal communication according this environment and the specific audience. Person who is “part of the company team”, who can put in the others’ shoes and sometimes (if necessary) can ask the top management the inconvenient questions. The colleague next to you who never says “It cannot be done!” but thinks of new and creative ways to communicate the right message, to the right people and through the right channel.

I see the good internal communication specialist as a person who works closely with the management, especially the middle management, being their partner and communication consult and thus improving employees’ engagement and motivation.

In the context of Apeiron training too - he or she has to be able to set SMART goals and achieve specific results.

If you need to describe in a few words what lies behind the abbreviation CIPR ICC to a close friend, outside the field of communications, what would those words be?

One highly professional team who are like the light in the tunnel - always reminding you that there is a way!

What motivates you in your work as a professional communicator?

Currently, in this company there are two main motivators - on side these are my colleagues in the company, who see “what is in for them” in the things we do and that realize they are not detached but part of one company and one bigger team. On the other hand it’s the company with its history, culture and the dynamic environment in the fastest growing Telecommunications sector.

But the most motivating reason perhaps is the absolute freedom to do different things every day and learning more and more from the people around you.

Tell us about an event or occasion when you were really proud and happy with your work.

I was really proud In 2008 during the so called Rotation Program which was launched for the three summer months. This project gave the opportunity for all employees to organize cross-functional visits to other structural units within the company, thus sharing information about their specific activities. The program aimed to improve intradepartmental communication and work processes between different divisions. The whole project was supported and monitored by the company middle management under the patronage of two of our directors. There were no limitations for duration, number of people or visits but to make this project more constructive the criteria for a rotation visit requests were very clear. For example: interdepartmental activities with the respective unit; cross-functional projects between your teams; need of more knowledge about the work process in the respective unit, and the roles and responsibilities of the people in it; etc.

The main benefits from Rotation Program 2008 were that participants in the project were able to learn more about the specific activities, the processes and the work flow in the company units were improved, people were more familiar with the different structural units’ functions, common work and cross-functional collaboration were also better.

My personal pride came from the participants’ positive feedback and their high assessment, because behind the dry data there were people whose opinion and feedback was very important and crucial to do things right.

Many employers do not understand the benefits of internal communications. If you face such a manager what would your strongest argument for the need of an internal communication specialist position or department be?

I would argue backed up by the company results over a certain period of time. Because the well established, two ways communication improves the employees’ engagement and motivation, thus affecting their performance and returning back into the company as a positive result. Of course we shouldn’t forget that if the happy customer brings two more, than the satisfied employees could bring much more to the company. They affect the company image as a brand and as an employer. The company team should be treated like a bigger family. If you want them to be loyal, think and act together, to be proactive then they need be informed, involved, to be able to initiate the change. Besides in all company teams - employees do have something to say, something useful which could benefit the organization.

And since we started with your workday - how do you relax and entertain?

:) what relax after SO much FUN during the working day?! I prefer sport, because it helps me “ventilate”. Therefore my newest mania, which started with the first hotter days in March, is to ride a bicycle in the park.
