Tsvetanka Buhova from Bulgaria
“A good internal communicator is the best friend of the corporation. He/She ‘understands its past, believes in its future and accepts its today the way it is’ so as to always act in its best interest.”
Our next CIPR Internal Communication Certificate student is Tsvetanka Buhova. Young and experienced specialist, she works as Assistant Corporate Communications at Siemens - Bulgaria. Time management and well organized work are a must for her, well combined with creative - orientated thinking.
Tsvetanka, how does your work day go?
My working day usually starts at nine a.m. The first thing I do when I arrive at the office is check the newspapers and see whether there is some important news related to the company. If so, this is a priority and I take all necessary steps in that direction. Otherwise, I make a plan for the day containing all the things I have to do, order them in terms of priority and then seek to act as in line as possible with my day plan.
Create the profile of a good internal communication specialist, as you see it.
A good internal communication specialist is on the first place a strategist. He/She should have a clear purpose on the first place and then follow it with according actions. I think that a good internal communicator should be a very patient person, very moderate in his/her judgment, if at all, and always able to control his/her emotions.
A good internal communicator is solution-oriented always seeking to make their “clients” feel comfortable with various situations.
A good internal communicator is “the psychologist of the company” - who knows its deepest secrets, ways and reasons.
A good internal communicator is the best friend of the corporation. He/She “understands its past, believes in its future and accepts its today the way it is” so as to always act in its best interest.
If you need to describe in a few words what lies behind the abbreviation CIPR ICC to a close friend, outside the field of communications, what would those words be?
CIPR stands for Chartered Institute of Public Relations - a UK-based institute, where you can acquire qualification in Internal Communications. This is actually what ICC stands for - Internal Communications Certificate. As far as I remember, this is the first institute to offer young people a qualification in IC. Following the ICC, one could apply for the next level in IC - a diploma.
What motivates you in your work as a professional communicator?
First of all, I feel deeply motivated to work for Siemens. This is a very socially responsible company with long-lasting traditions and good publicity. Flexible corporate culture, qualified personnel, professional response to every-day matters, etc. Regardless of the position, Siemens is a good company to work for.
As far as it comes to what motivates me most in my work as a professional communicator, I would say it is the freedom that comes with it. And I will explain what I mean here.
It is very often the case that challenging situations put me on the edge of my own limitations forcing me to overcome my fears, inner worries and think out of the box. This opens new horizons for me and thus sets me free.
There are of, course other reasons why I feel motivated to do what I do. The work of a good communicator means acting with purpose. This presents a constant challenge both in view of my professional and personal development granting the opportunity to always be aware of what you do and why you are doing it.
Last but not least, working as a communicator means life-long learning, exploring and getting to know - different people, different views, and different situations.
Tell us about an event or occasion when you were really proud and happy with your work.
I was really happy with the project for the construction of a kindergarten in the office premises in Sofia. This was a really challenging idea and we had to work in very close cooperation with many other departments. We made a good team. Many people were aware of the efforts and resources spent on the project and were really happy with the result.
Following the official opening in September 2009, I am now able to see the kids playing outside in the playground, hear the laughter and see their happy faces every day. This makes me feel proud - that I was a part of the team to make that happen.
Many employers do not understand the benefits of internal communications. If you face such a manager what would your strongest argument for the need of an internal communication specialist position or department be?
Involving the employees in the working process will surely be the first argument I would have. Because managers like to see results - and, according to the latest studies in the sphere, the best way to increase performance is to make the employees involved in what they do. Of course, it is a real challenge to change someone’s view about something. I would say it is more a process rather than just giving strong arguments. As a strategy, following the arguments, I would try to buy myself some time which I would use to get to know the employer’s ideas for the company and help him/her find the best way to communicate them to the employees so as to involve them in their realization and achieve the results sought.
And since we started with your workday - how do you relax and entertain?
I relax in various ways - sometimes I need a “physical discharge” and then I do some sports or go for a long walk. When I need to relax and release I read or listen to music at home or in the park.
