Tanya Brickler from Bulgaria
Tanya Brickler is the real strong professional type of a specialist - solid theoretical background, wide experience, team-working orientated and able to communicate in common language with managers and employees. She is capable of drawing everyone out for honest and open communication - an important skill for a good internal communicator.
Tanya, how does your work day go?
For me, every workday is a new adventure but they all start the same - with a cup of coffee It takes me a while to wake up in the morning, so I usually use that time to review e-mails, figure out the things I need to get done, and prioritize tasks. Of course, some days go according to the plan and some are not even close, so I’m always on my toes and never bored. What more can you want?! Oh yeah, let’s not forget actually accomplishing things. You add that to the mix and it’s a great day at work!
Create the profile of a good internal communication specialist, as you see it.
Well, it’s hard to list all the things that make an internal communication specialist a good one but one thing I know for sure - you can judge by the results. If the company’s employees feel informed, engaged, and enthusiastic at work, then someone has apparently done a good job reaching them. It is undoubtedly important for IC specialists to be good at strategy, as well as tactics and all of that while knowing your company and coworkers and taking into account what they care about, what problems they face, and what motivates them.
If you need to describe in a few words what lies behind the abbreviation CIPR ICC to a close friend, outside the field of communications, what would those words be?
It’s the best way for internal communication specialists to advance their professional qualification and get international recognition for their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
What motivates you in your work as a professional communicator?
I get motivated by achievements and close relationships. It makes me feel great to successfully complete a project and, even more so, to see the people around me engaged, happy, and willing to put in extra efforts.
Tell us about an event or occasion when you were really proud and happy with your work.
There are many times when I have been really happy with my work. Basically, every time when I’ve given a 100% of myself, when I’ve been challenged and worked hard to achieve success, regardless of the outcome. Even though sometimes things may not turn out the way I want them to, I can still feel proud of my work when I know I’ve given my best to make a project successful. Of course, I’m truly happy when the end result is a glaring success. You can’t beat that!
Many employers do not understand the benefits of internal communications. If you face such a manager what would your strongest argument for the need of an internal communication specialist position or department be?
Well, if there is not an IC specialist in the organization, there are most probably some issues going on - employees don’t feel like they have enough information, rumors are being spread through the grapevine, there is lack of motivation, initiative, and engagement, and on top of that - low productivity. Most probably the manager has already seen the consequences of the above mentioned issues and it may be enough to just point out that those are actually the consequences of bad (or lack of) communication and how the situation can be greatly improved by an internal communication specialist.
And since we started with your workday - how do you relax and entertain?
I am boring I love to spend time with friends, sleep late, watch movies, and read. Travelling is my new passion and, since I haven’t been to that many places, I have a lot to explore. So, wish me luck
